The Canalside Heritage Centre is a vibrant hub for visitors to enjoy and explore, with an enticing tearoom, welcoming gift shop and interpretation centre, as well as tranquil gardens and lots of activities to delight in. You can enjoy a walk along the river or the canal, either with one of our volunteer walk leaders or at your leisure. Look out for the many boats, enjoy the changing colours and sunshine on the water and enjoy the plentiful wildlife that can be found at any time of year.

Admission to the Heritage Centre is free and our exhibition can be enjoyed for a small recommended donation of £2 per person (under 16s can enter for free) and all money raised from these donations is used to directly support our work with the local community.

Once inside you can explore one of the original cottages to get a sense of what domestic life was like in the 19th century. Then take the twisting staircase upstairs to the Stories of the Cut gallery, filled with a collection of fascinating personal tales and historic photographs which depict life in the cottages and here on the canal through the ages.

With a full programme of affordable events and activities throughout the year, there is always something to get involved with for all members of the family. Please see our Special Events and Regular Activities pages for more information.

We are open 9.30am to 4.30pm, 7 days a week. The Heritage Centre is fully accessible with a lift to the first floor. If you have any questions about your visit please don't hesitate to get in touch by calling 0115 9221773 or email [email protected]
